While Seeking the Light,
After completing my mandatory service following graduation from Cukurova Medical School and subsequent military service as an active and motivated emergency physician in a military hospital, I felt a close connection to radiology due to my interest in photography. There was also no lack of a surgical desire within me.
During my specialization training at the Department of Radiology at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine, my love for radiology increased, but my interest in surgery did not diminish, and these two interests manifested in interventional radiology.
Constant curiosity and my international interest showed itself early in my specialization. Creating an opportunity, I worked with Dr. Sellar at West General Hospital in Scotland in 1995, where I saw my first GDC coil. This visit deeply affected me in terms of the doctor-patient relationship. While we were shouting in the corridors, there was silence and respect here.
When I was called to serve where I grew up and where my family was, I could not remain indifferent to this call. I had outlined my career path here; my goal was interventional radiology, but I also wanted to master MR. I established interventional radiology at Firat University, and while I was here, I threw myself into Justus-Liebig University in Germany with the opportunity that arose and saw my first superior vena cava stenting here in 2003.
These short visits taught me that I needed to go to a country where the light of science was burning. It was time to cross the ocean. My luck went well in Chicago, and I entered a family environment. Here, I found my place in both MR and interventional radiology. I had the chance to meet and work with Prof. Ramsey, Prof. Huckman, and Prof. Osborn, who are world-renowned in neuroradiology. I also had the chance to enter cases with Prof. Debrun and saw the use of the first detachable balloon in the brain with him.
Then again in Germany, Humboldt University. In Berlin, I learned myom embolization from Prof. Kröncke, whom I still meet frequently.
With all this experience, I established the interventional radiology department at two universities and two private hospitals in our country, and I still feel the excitement of establishing the interventional radiology department with a corporate identity in my new hospital.
The journey continues; there is much more to do...
